Participants in the course EDEE 372 Teaching Science, Inukjuak March 1 –10

This course is part of the 60 credit Certificate in First Nations and Inuit Education (KSB/McGill Teacher Training program). Taking courses is a requirement for those who do not yet have their Brevet (teaching license). Upon receiving the Certificate graduates can and are encouraged to continue their studies in order to complete their B.Ed.

Such courses are intense with long hours both in and out of class. In this course, all participants enjoyed the teaching/learning opportunity and have caught the “Science and Technology Bug”. Participants hope the “Science and Technology Bug” is contagious so that the children of Nunavik will benefit from the knowledge acquired.

Levina Puttayuk, Annie K. Alaku and Valentina de Krom instructed the 15 female participants in the course. Also, Alain Rochefort taught a daylong computer workshop.

The objectives of the course are for participants to:

• be familiar with the concepts contained in the science curriculum (KSB, QEP),
• be able to foster learning that develops a positive attitude towards and an interest in science,
• investigate traditional knowledge about science with the input of Elders,
• be confident in teaching and promoting science in an elementary classroom,
• have obtained a better understanding and appreciation of the value of science and technology in everyday life,
• further develop research skills and scientific literacy.
