Nunavik is home to 13 180 residents. Among its population, 10 755 are Inuit, 98% of whom speak Inuktitut as their mother tongue.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n <\/div>\n

Inuktitut: the language of instruction<\/h3>\n <\/div>\n

Under the JBNQA<\/a>, we have unique powers and jurisdictions that aim to protect, maintain, and develop the Inuit language, culture, and way of life.<\/p> <\/div>\n <\/div>\n<\/div>[\/vc_column][\/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column]

When are second languages introduced?<\/h3>\n <\/div>\n <\/div>\n<\/div>[vc_tta_accordion color=”vista-blue” active_section=”-1″ collapsible_all=”true”][vc_tta_section title=”Second languages at the primary and secondary levels” tab_id=”1619707193226-46bcc76f-e9ed1626719505087a950-1b6816275767473011627938463412162795759634416298412213271629917208986″][vc_column_text]Teaching is done in Inuktitut from kindergarten to grade 2.<\/p>\n

English or French is introduced as a second language for 90 minutes per week in grade 1 and 2. In grade 3, 50% of all instruction is provided in the second language.<\/p>\n

As of grade 4, instruction is given in either second-language English or French, and Inuktitut continues to be taught as a subject.<\/p>\n

  • Grade 1 and 2 = 77 to 85%<\/strong><\/li>\n
  • Grade 3 = 50 to 61%<\/strong><\/li>\n
  • Grade 4, 5 and 6 = 22 to 33%<\/strong><\/li>\n
  • Secondary cycle 1 (Sec 1 and 2) = 30 to 36%<\/strong><\/li>\n
  • Secondary cycle 2 (Sec 3, 4 and 5) = 27 to 33%<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

    • Grade 3 = 39 to 50%<\/strong><\/li>\n
    • Grade 4, 5 and 6 = 67 to 78%<\/strong><\/li>\n
    • Secondary cycle 1 (Sec 1 and 2) = 64 to 70%<\/strong><\/li>\n
    • Secondary cycle 2 (Sec 3, 4 and 5) = 67 to 73%<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n
