Throughout elementary, most students have expressed, at one point or another, mixed feelings about waking up early in the morning for school.[\/vc_column_text][\/vc_column][vc_column width=&#8221;1\/12&#8243;][\/vc_column][\/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column width=&#8221;1\/12&#8243;][\/vc_column][vc_column width=&#8221;10\/12&#8243;][vc_single_image image=&#8221;11876&#8243; img_size=&#8221;full&#8221; alignment=&#8221;center&#8221;][vc_column_text]<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong>\u201c Ughhhh\u2026 is this some kind of punishment?<br \/>\n<\/strong><strong>Ref, which rule have I broken to get stuck behind a desk for so many periods?!\u201d \u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Fortunately for us, we had teachers who we could look up to, who were able to stimulate our minds and who motivated our desire to come to school each day. As luck would have it, I met a teacher who fits this very description: Andrea Brazeau, a post-secondary graduate who has brought knowledge back to her hometown![\/vc_column_text][\/vc_column][vc_column width=&#8221;1\/12&#8243;][\/vc_column][\/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column]<div class=\"module-testimonial \">\n    <div class=\"row justify-content-center\">\n                    <div class=\"col-12 col-xxl-7 col-testi\">\n                <div class=\"titleTesti-box\">\n                                                        <\/div>\n                                    <div class=\"image-box-mobile\">\n                        <img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.kativik.qc.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/01\/andrea-quote.jpg\" class=\"img-fluid\" alt=\"\">\n                    <\/div>\n                                <div class=\"testimonial-content-box\"  data-aos=\"fade\" data-aos-delay=\"500\">\n                    <div class=\"testi-color-bg-box color-bleu\">\n                        <div class=\"deco-left\"><\/div>\n                        <blockquote><p>I like to believe that I&#8217;ve helped my students build self-esteem throughout the school year. It has been a great and valuable opportunity for her to implement, adapt and refine classroom management techniques she learned when completing her Bachelor of Arts at McGill University.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #96bbda;\"><strong>\u201c<\/strong>\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"background-color: #61a6df; color: #ffffff;\"> Classroom management is key. From there on, you can build students\u2019 confidence and self-esteem and then they\u2019ll have the skills to get their work done. <\/span><span style=\"color: #96bbda;\">\u00a0<strong>\u201d<\/strong><\/span> explains Andrea. I enthusiastically nod in agreement, even with limited knowledge of classroom management.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #96bbda;\"><strong>\u201c<\/strong>\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"background-color: #61a6df; color: #ffffff;\"> You seem to know how to work a younger crowd. <\/span><span style=\"color: #96bbda;\">\u00a0<strong>\u201d<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #96bbda;\"><strong>\u201c<\/strong>\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"background-color: #61a6df; color: #ffffff;\"> I love working with kids! I&#8217;ve always worked with them. It&#8217;s about putting on a great performance every day. When interacting with kids, you need to be energetic and fun! <\/span><span style=\"color: #96bbda;\">\u00a0<strong>\u201d<\/strong><\/span> she explains with enthusiasm.<\/p>\n<p>Adopting a fun approach can produce a change in someone\u2019s behavior. Keeping the learning process fun and fresh has a positive effect on education and Andrea knows how to put the fun back into the game. In high school, Andrea was a passionate hockey player who would help coach the younger Atom and Pee Wee players.[\/vc_column_text][\/vc_column][vc_column width=&#8221;1\/12&#8243;][\/vc_column][\/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column width=&#8221;1\/12&#8243;][\/vc_column][vc_column width=&#8221;10\/12&#8243;][vc_single_image image=&#8221;12061&#8243; img_size=&#8221;full&#8221; alignment=&#8221;center&#8221;][vc_column_text]<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong>\u201c <em>Coach Brazeau, bring on the whiteboard!<\/em><\/strong><strong>\u00a0\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Every Sunday, Andrea prepares her lessons by asking herself :<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #96bbda;\"><strong>\u201c<\/strong>\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"background-color: #61a6df; color: #ffffff;\"> What&#8217;s my goal for the week?\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"color: #96bbda;\">\u00a0<strong>\u201d<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p>As I write this article, I find myself asking the very same question. What\u2019s my end goal? Is it to talk about what Andrea brings to the Ulluriaq School team? How do I go about this? Let\u2019s try to answer these questions by launching a learning centre in this article. Take a look at the whiteboard that has been transformed into a hockey rink which we will use to illustrate Andrea\u2019s \u2018plays\u2019 or in laymen\u2019s terms her teaching approach.<\/p>\n<p>For those kids who see school as an imposed punishment by their parents (aka the referees), let\u2019s give them another perspective of the game by heading over to the penalty box.[\/vc_column_text][\/vc_column][vc_column width=&#8221;1\/12&#8243;][\/vc_column][\/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column width=&#8221;1\/12&#8243;][\/vc_column][vc_column width=&#8221;10\/12&#8243;][vc_single_image image=&#8221;12067&#8243; img_size=&#8221;full&#8221; alignment=&#8221;center&#8221;][vc_column_text]<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong>\u201c <em>See that cooler over there on the floor under the bench? Well, inside it you\u2019ll find frozen hockey pucks.<\/em><\/strong><strong>\u00a0\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Let\u2019s start by randomly picking one of Andrea\u2019s lessons. Now imagine it\u2019s the cooler. Let\u2019s break this lesson down into many parts each represented by one of the frozen pucks. Every time Andrea asks a question \u2013 a potential shot on goal \u2013 she is putting a new puck into play, ready to pass to a student. A wrong answer clinks off the goalpost or crossbar and doesn\u2019t cross the goal line. A correct answer is a hockey puck in the net. <em>C\u2019est le but!<\/em>[\/vc_column_text][\/vc_column][vc_column width=&#8221;1\/12&#8243;][\/vc_column][\/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column width=&#8221;1\/12&#8243;][\/vc_column][vc_column width=&#8221;10\/12&#8243;][vc_single_image image=&#8221;12037&#8243; img_size=&#8221;full&#8221; alignment=&#8221;center&#8221;][vc_column_text]<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong>\u201c <em>Hands raised, stick in the air\u2026<br \/>\nCan the student hit Andrea&#8217;s pass with a one-timer and score?\u00a0<\/em><\/strong><strong>\u00a0\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #96bbda;\"><strong>\u201c<\/strong>\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"background-color: #61a6df; color: #ffffff;\"> Every time we work on the white board, each student gets a shot at answering, so I really know who knows the material. <\/span><span style=\"color: #96bbda;\">\u00a0<strong>\u201d<\/strong><\/span> Andrea explains.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #96bbda;\"><strong>\u201c<\/strong>\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"background-color: #61a6df; color: #ffffff;\"> That&#8217;s how you keep track, nice. <\/span><span style=\"color: #96bbda;\">\u00a0<strong>\u201d<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #96bbda;\"><strong>\u201c<\/strong>\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"background-color: #61a6df; color: #ffffff;\"> Yeah. It&#8217;s a lot of observation, but in the end, I know which level they&#8217;re at.\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"color: #96bbda;\">\u00a0<strong>\u201d<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #96bbda;\"><strong>\u201c<\/strong>\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"background-color: #61a6df; color: #ffffff;\"> What are your objectives as a teacher?\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"color: #96bbda;\">\u00a0<strong>\u201d<\/strong><\/span> I ask.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #96bbda;\"><strong>\u201c<\/strong>\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"background-color: #61a6df; color: #ffffff;\"> I want my students to build on their literacy. If the kids can read and write, they&#8217;ll be able to do anything in life. I currently use a lot of pictures during tests to guide them through their second language.\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"color: #96bbda;\">\u00a0<strong>\u201d<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p>Being a teacher in the same school where she was once a student, Andrea reinforces her role by bridging the gap between language of instruction and second language. She\u2019s already aware of what the bridge is made of\u2026 at this point, she can focus on resurfacing this familiar walkway for her students to confidently navigate.[\/vc_column_text][\/vc_column][vc_column width=&#8221;1\/12&#8243;][\/vc_column][\/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column width=&#8221;1\/12&#8243;][\/vc_column][vc_column width=&#8221;10\/12&#8243;][vc_single_image image=&#8221;12033&#8243; img_size=&#8221;full&#8221; alignment=&#8221;center&#8221;][vc_column_text]<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong>\u201c <em>Follow me kids!<br \/>\nI\u2019ll help smooth out the path ahead. <\/em><\/strong><strong>\u00a0\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #96bbda;\"><strong>\u201c<\/strong>\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"background-color: #61a6df; color: #ffffff;\"> When I teach something that is harder to understand, I&#8217;ll repeat in Inuktitut so that they really get the concept and then explain it once more in English. <\/span><span style=\"color: #96bbda;\">\u00a0<strong>\u201d<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #96bbda;\"><strong>\u201c<\/strong>\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"background-color: #61a6df; color: #ffffff;\"> So language repetition and association. Got it! <\/span><span style=\"color: #96bbda;\">\u00a0<strong>\u201d<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #96bbda;\"><strong>\u201c<\/strong>\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"background-color: #61a6df; color: #ffffff;\"> Also on the confidence aspect, another objective of mine is to encourage them to become good human beings. It\u2019s about being respectful and aware of the people around. Overall, I focus on teaching them basic life manners and life skills.\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"color: #96bbda;\">\u00a0<strong>\u201d<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #96bbda;\"><strong>\u201c<\/strong>\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"background-color: #61a6df; color: #ffffff;\"> Awesome.
