(April 26, 2019)<\/strong> \u2013 The Kativik Regional Police Force (KRPF) and Kativik Ilisarniliriniq have proudly entered into a mutual agreement allowing for close cooperation. The agreement will enhance police community intervention, using prevention to deter cases from escalating into emergency situations. Signed by all parties, the agreement came into force on April 12, 2019.<\/p>\n

The agreement aims to foster a safe learning environment at school, through coordination between the school board, its schools and the KRPF with respect to crime prevention and student protection in cases where police intervention or investigation is required. \u201cThis is a positive step forward, especially with regards to prevention, which is a key aspect of the community approach we want to promote,\u201d said Jean-Pierre Larose, Chief of the KRPF and Director of Public Security.<\/p>\n

The agreement recognizes the need for close consultation and collaboration between the school board and the KRPF as to the development of prevention workshops and activities. \u201cWe are very glad to now have mechanisms in place that will help tailor the KRPF service to the needs of Nunavik students, while also taking into consideration the trauma-informed teaching practices used at the school board,\u201d commented Robert Watt, President of Kativik Ilisarniliriniq.<\/p>\n

The agreement also provides guidelines in case of emergency situations. \u201cWe really see this agreement as a tool that bridges both organizations’ mission. It\u2019s implementation will be instrumental in ensuring the well-being of students, and more generally the well-being of Nunavik communities,\u201d declared Mr. Larose.<\/p>\n

The Kativik Regional Police Forces (KRPF)<\/strong> delivers regular policing services in the 14 northern villages of Nunavik. The headquarters of the KRPF are located in Kuujjuaq, and detachments operate in each community. The KRPF was created in 1996, with the participation of the Solicitor General of Canada and the minist\u00e8re de la S\u00e9curit\u00e9 publique in accordance with the James Bay and Northern Quebec Agreement. Kativik Ilisarniliriniq<\/strong>, the school board of Nunavik, was created in 1975, under the James Bay and Northern Quebec Agreement (JBNQA). Since 1978, it has been the exclusive provider of educational services to all Nunavik residents. Under the JBNQA, the school board also acts as an institution with unique powers and jurisdiction geared towards the protection and development of the Inuit language, culture, and way of life, through the delivery of tailored educational services and programs. The education programs developed by the school board are offered in all schools of the 14 Nunavik communities, in Inuktitut as first language and in French and English as second languages.
