Running a student centre has its challenges, but someone has to do it! Join us in celebrating our long-time employee Alice Berthe, who is the Centre Director at the Kajusivik Adult Education Centre in Kuujjuaq. This article offers an inside look at the day-to-day of running an adult education centre.
At Kativik Ilisarniliriniq, we are very fortunate to count on the support and dedication of a number of long-time employees, who guide students throughout Nunavik on their educational journey.
In October 2024, we sat down with Alice Berthe, Centre Director at the Kajusivik Adult Education Centre in Kuujjuaq, to learn a bit more about her story.
Alice has been working at the Kajusivik Adult Education Centre since 2000, but her path with Kativik Ilisarniliriniq started back in 1985, at Jaanimmarik School. Working as a Centre Director is not an easy task; there are many moving parts that demand your attention. “You’re kind of like a jack of all trades,” she shares.
Problem solving takes up a lot of Alice’s time, especially when it comes to the student residence. “Sometimes it’s hard to find employees, such as cooks or night guards. So, from time to time, I’ve ended up being the cook!” she admits.
Young people nowadays are incredible. They know quite a bit, compared to what we were taught in school. They really impress me.
While Alice’s role comes with challenges, it also brings the most important reward of all: helping students succeed in their future endeavours! “There are many options. Not everyone wants to go down south or to college. Students might want to learn a trade instead, and we offer all those options.”
When asked what inspires her, Alice doesn’t hesitate for a second. “The students!” she replies, adding that she is amazed by how much she learns from them.
