Sexuality Education: Pilot Project to Begin in Two Nunavik Schools
Kativik Ilisarniliriniq, in partnership with the Nunavik Regional Board of Health and Social Services (NRBHSS), will begin piloting sexuality education modules during the 2026-2027 school year in Kuujjuaq and Umiujaq.
This initiative follows a mandate provided to Education Services by the Council of Commissioners and reflects ongoing collaboration between education professionals and health professionals to support students’ healthy development and well-being.
In June 2026, the Council of Commissioners received an update on the development of the educational content. Commissioners highlighted the importance of ensuring alignment with Inuit culture, particularly for younger students, and emphasized the need to inform and involve parents throughout the process.
The educational modules have been developed by the NRBHSS with the support of Kativik Ilisarniliriniq and adapted to the Nunavik context through consultations with parents and community stakeholders.
The pilot phase will include:
- Staff training;
- Parent information sessions;
- Opportunities for community feedback;
- Ongoing support from health and psychosocial professionals.
Parents and guardians will be invited to review the educational materials, ask questions, and learn more about the objectives of the pilot before sessions are delivered to students.
Feedback gathered during the pilot will help inform future decisions regarding the program.
