Course 1: Knots and Splices
Course 2: Net Mending
This training is designed for both experienced fishermen and those who are new to the trade.
- You’ll gain new skills and expand your existing knowledge.
- You’ll get a set of certifications that meet industry standards for First Aid, radiotelephone communications, vessel operation and more.
The training is offered in English.
This unique training is an opportunity to get a hands-on feel of what the fishing industry has to offer.
The training modules include a mix of class-based and on-vessel learning. You’ll get to directly experience at sea, on a fishing vessel, what you’ve learned in the classroom.
Most of the training modules are offered in Nunavik (Inukjuak). Part of the training is also offered in Grande-Rivière (Gaspésie region of Quebec).
This training could lead to professions such as fishing vessel captain, officer or fishing vessel deckhand.
You could also work as a self-employed fisherman.
You can also continue your studies in the fishing industry sector.
Training Content
This training is divided into 6 modules. Each module is comprised of 2 to 4 courses. Students can join the training for a single module.
Each module is independent. The completion of previous modules is not required to join the training for one or more specific modules.
However, the courses offered within each module are sequential. Meaning that within each module, the courses must be completed successfully, in the order that they are scheduled in.
MODULE 1:
- Course 1: Domestic Vessel Safety (DVS)
- Course 2: Restricted Operator’s Certificate – Maritime Commercial (ROC-MC)
- Course 3: Canadian Red Cross (CRC) Certification for Marine Basic First Aid (MBFAB)
MODULE 2
- Course 1: On Board Handling and Conservation (species biology)—Species: Crustaceans and Fish 6
- Course 2: Introduction to the Fishing Profession
- Course 3: Organizing Deck Work
- Course 4: Preparing for a Fishing Trip
MODULE 3
- Course 1: Knots and Splices
- Course 2: Net Mending
MODULE 4
- Course 1: Navigation Instruments – Electronic Simulator
- Course 2: Vessel Trips and Dry Docking
- Course 3: Marine Engines
MODULE 5
- Course 1: Navigation Safety
- Course 2: Nautical Charts (basics)
MODULE 6
- Course 1: Pre-Fishing Trip Checks and Operating the Fishing Vessel
- Course 2: Operating Fixed Fishing Gear
- Course 3: Operating Mobile Fishing Gear
Admission requirements
Candidates must meet certain criteria.
Must meet the following conditions:
- Be at least 18 years of age.
- Be able to read, write and communicate in English.
