Early end-of-the-year for schools in Puvirnituq due to water access issues

Due to the evolving situation regarding access to drinking water, water delivery, and wastewater management in the village of Puvirnituq, Kativik Ilisarniliriniq has made the difficult decision to gradually close Iguarsivik and Ikaarvik schools, effective Tuesday, May 20, 2025. In the current context, we cannot ensure the continuity of educational services.
Measures have been taken to ensure students are not penalized. All students who are required to write end-of-year exams for subjects leading to compulsory credits for the high school diploma will be able to do so. Since the end of last week, schedules have been adjusted accordingly. Resources will also be deployed to ensure catch-up instruction, if necessary, for the 2025-2026 school year.
Although schools are closed to students, teams of essential staff will remain present. Over the past few days, Kativik Ilisarniliriniq has been developing an emergency plan in collaboration with these teams and municipal authorities to provide water access points to community residents (for example, by making the laundry rooms of some of our homes accessible). We will continue to offer all possible support to municipal authorities in the coming weeks.
