The special education technician will work with students with physical or mental disabilities, social maladjustments, or learning difficulties by applying special education techniques and methods both inside and outside of the students’ regular class.
FUNCTION & DUTIES:
- Help students integrate into the regular class to the appropriate degree, and modify the instructional activities so that they become accessible to the students;
- Work with the assigned student(s) one-to-one and carry out planned activities, and encourage and help the student(s) in areas deemed necessary;
- Plan, with appropriate support, activities which will help the students to progress to the best of their ability;
- Work closely with the homeroom teacher, special education teachers, administrators, and Complementary and Compassionate Services team;
- Participate in the regular evaluation sessions in order to give feedback concerning the students’ individual progress to relevant staff members and to the parents of the students;
- Participate in the Special Education Committee;
- Collaborate in developing IEPs when pertaining to the assigned student(s);
- Support and mentor local special education technicians as well as coordinate the work of support staff in performing duties related to the implementation of programs involving technical operations for which the incumbent is responsible under the school administration;
- Assist students with their physical needs, such as dressing, eating, travelling to and from school, as required;
- Utilize behaviour management skills to respond and intervene appropriately in situations involving verbal and non-verbal student behaviour;
- Be able to work closely with other staff members and KI personnel;
- Utilize problem-solving skills and show adaptability to different situations.
QUALIFICATIONS:
College Diploma in Special Education.
The School Board may, at its discretion, waive any or all of the afore-mentioned qualifications if it finds a suitable candidate who is a beneficiary of the James Bay and Northern Québec Agreement (JBNQA) and who accepts, as a condition of employment, to follow a training plan determined by the Board.
REQUIREMENTS:
- Experience working with special needs children;
- Fluency in English and preferably a second language of KI (Inuktitut, English, and French);
- Experience working in Nunavik (asset).
WORK SCHEDULE:
35 hours per week from Monday to Friday.
CLASSIFICATION / SALARY / BENEFITS:
In accordance with the AENQ collective agreement for support staff, this position belongs to job category 4207: from $27.71 to $39.88 an hour depending on qualification and experience. All benefits are prorated based on the percentage of the task.
