The benefits of sporting activities go far beyond physical training. Sports drive discipline, teach resilience, and act as a social catalyst. With the help of passionate mentors, they also foster personal growth and a strong sense of self.
In secondary school, sports offer much more than the simple joy of play. They are a vehicle for growth, teaching students discipline, resilience, and commitment. These core values apply across all sports, and together, they give teenagers the determination to face life’s challenges. Could one argue that sports play a transformative role in developing the identity and character of young people? Physical Education Consultant Reda Ynineb shares his point of view:
“If we instill the values of sports in children starting in elementary school, it will be less surprising to see that, by the time they reach secondary school, they no longer smoke, they are interested in a wider range of sports, and they adopt healthier diets and lifestyles,” he explains.
Following the example of his own coaches, Reda takes pride in teaching discipline and perseverance to his students. He aspires to support youths on their personal journey by helping them overcome challenges and celebrating their athletic victories with them. His ultimate goal: to strengthen their mindset.
Supporting a student’s athletic journey brings invaluable benefits. Every child deserves to be given these opportunities, and there’s no reason why young Nunavimmiut shouldn’t have the same chances as students elsewhere in Quebec.
From personal growth to friendship
Reda recalls a touching moment at the Salluit airport, where a student from Iguarsivik School was enthusiastically welcomed by girls from Ikusik Secondary School. Thanks to the intercommunity soccer tournament, this unlikely encounter led to a lasting friendship, one that probably never would have happened otherwise. Sébastien Pongui Bayette and Guy Koulla, two teachers from Ikusik School involved in the tournament, point out that the collaborative nature of certain sports can strongly contribute to personal growth and camaraderie.
“When I first arrived in Canada, in secondary school, I was shy and often kept to myself. Then my passion for soccer changed things. It allowed me to connect with others and make friends. In this team sport, success depends on getting along and working with the other players,” explains Guy.
I’ll never forget my coach, who was also my physical education teacher at the time, and a handball champion. During our one-hour training sessions, we wouldn’t even touch the ball. It was all focused on physical training, developing healthy habits, and hydrating with a specific amount of water.
Sébastien adds the following: “A team sport requires multiple participants and helps develop a variety of social skills.”
By rethinking the role of sports in secondary school, Reda, Guy, and Sébastien inspire teenagers to overcome obstacles and set ambitious goals for themselves, while developing confidence and determination. Thus, physical education becomes a catalyst for transformation, encouraging young people to grow and reach their full potential. This powerful vision redefines the role of sports at school: beyond physical ability, they help nurture essential human qualities.
Teamwork, cooperation, and respect for others are qualities I gained through sports, which I can now share with students.
