From March 26 to 28 Kativik Ilisarniliriniq will host the Quebec Aboriginal Science Fair 2019 (QASF), in Kuujjuaq. The event, co-organized by the school board and the Quebec Aboriginal Science and Engineering Association, will bring together participants from thirty different First Nations and Inuit communities.

The youth from Algonquin, Atikamekw, Cree, Huron-Wendat, Inuit, Innu, Micmac and Mohawk nations will meet in Kuujjuaq to share their science projects under the theme: The Science of Indigenous Knowledge.

This theme reflects the development of Inuit-centred education at Kativik Ilisarniliriniq as stated in our strategic plan. Throughout this week of scientific, technological and cultural activities, students will be immersed in Inuit scientific knowledge.

The theme “The Science of Indigenous Knowledge” is also reflected in the visuals created for this year’s edition of the Quebec Aboriginal Science Fair. Inspired by the artwork of Nunavik artists Tivi Etok, Abraham Niaquq Irqu, Maggie Kiatainaq and Juanasialuk Irqumia, the event’s poster conveys the idea of a collective movement forward, rooted in indigenous knowledge and science.

We wish to invite all Kuujjuammiut and those visiting the Kuujjuaq community between March 26 and 28 to attend this event. Join Indigenous students from all over Quebec, as they celebrate the richness of their science’s heritage.

The school board is delighted to confirm the participation of Sheila Watt-Cloutier, who will address participants on March 27, at the opening ceremony. Ms Watt-Cloutier is a Canadian Inuit activist, author of “The right to be cold and former political representative for Inuit at the regional, national and international levels.

In addition, the renowned Inuit athlete, actor and cultural educator Johnny Issaluk will lead workshops introducing participants to activities related to Inuit traditions, culture and knowledge.
