News Release

With the end of the school year around the corner, Kativik Ilisarniliriniq would like to update parents and students in the youth and adult sectors on how students will receive their grades.

It is important to stress that the school board is following the guidelines issued by the Ministry of Education on how grades will be awarded.

Adult sector
We are pleased to announce that the Minister of Education authorized the administration of exams for students enrolled in general education courses, starting May 11. These exams will be administered at our adult education centres or youth sector schools. This will be conducted for students enrolled in general education courses that lead to a Secondary School Diploma or to upgrading of competencies in specific subjects.

The Adult Education department has been in communication with these students to determine when to offer the exams.

Students registered in vocational training programs have received their grades for modules that were in progress when courses were interrupted by the COVID-19 pandemic. They were assessed for these modules according to the professional judgment of their teachers, and based on the achievement of the required skills. Once classes resume, the school board will contact all the students needing to complete additional modules to graduate from a vocational training program.

We continue to offer general education courses at a distance. If you are interested, please contact Simata Manning through our website or via the Adult Education and Vocational Training Messenger.

Youth sector
For the assignment of marks for students at the primary and secondary levels, the general principles announced by the Minister of Education on March 22 continue to apply: the transition to the next grade level will rely on the professional judgment of teachers and will be based on the student’s grades for the first and second terms of the school year.

On May 6, the Minister of Education provided further details related to the evaluation of students in the youth sector, taking into consideration the exceptional circumstances brought on by the COVID-19 pandemic. The proposal currently under discussion with the Quebec government will require an amendment to the Basic school regulation (Régime pédagogique) to allow for flexibility in the evaluation of learning. It also foresees that, by July 10, all final report cards would be issued to students by the Ministry of Education.

At the moment, all school boards in Quebec are waiting further details from the Ministry of Education. It is important to stress that Nunavik students are not being left out; they are experiencing the same situation as students in the rest of Quebec. Like all other school boards within the province, Kativik Ilisarniliriniq is committed to doing the outmost to ensure that report cards will be finalized in a timely manner as soon as the Ministry of Education issues the necessary guidelines.

Secondary V students who are expected to graduate this year and who have applied to vocational training programs or colleges will receive their final report card in time to pursue their post-secondary studies.

Who is at work right now at the school board?
All our administrative offices are currently open. Employees assigned to these offices are working from home. School and adult education centre administrators are currently teleworking and providing the required follow-ups in the workplace for any emergencies and ensuring the delivery of essential services.
Teachers in the youth and adult sectors are currently working from home. In the youth sector, teachers have been developing lesson plans that are being uploaded to the Nunavik-IcE web portal, supporting the secondary student mentoring program and many of our Nunavik-based teachers have been providing support to the Nunavik health sector.

Planning for the next school year and ensuring the continuity of educational services in the youth and adult sectors
The school board is actively working on planning for the next school year. We are developing scenarios that will be finalized once the Nunavik Regional Emergency Preparedness Advisory Committee (NREPAC) issues recommendations on measures to implement when reopening Nunavik.

Kativik Ilisarniliriniq will inform Nunavimmiut as new information becomes available.
