Program Description
Rewarding profession that suits empathetic, discreet and vigilant people. A job as a nurse requires excellent physical condition, good listening skills, a sense of initiative and good judgment.
First of all, a preparatory year is planned for students to:
- be able to acquire the essential prerequisites for obtaining the DES (chemistry, sciences and mathematics)
- go through a transitional period adapted to the cultural context of Nunavik and supported by an innovative pedagogical approach, largely based on practice
- be able to enter the college-level nursing program afterward (offered in Kuujjuaq)
Following their training and the awarding of the DEC in Nursing, students must pass the OIIQ (Ordre des infirmières et infirmiers du Québec) exam to obtain their permit to practice and thus have the right to practice anywhere in Quebec.
You’ll be able to:
- Assess a person’s state of health
- Determine and carry out of the nursing care and treatment plan
- Provide nursing and medical care and treatment in order to maintain or restore health and prevent illness
- Provide palliative care
- Monitor the health condition of patients and keep patient records up to date
- Provide specialized care (dressings, blood pressure readings, blood tests, injections, etc.)
- Administer and adjust prescription medications
- Perform tests and therapies as prescribed by a physician
Admission requirements
Candidates must meet one of the following:
Persons holding a Secondary School Diploma or its recognized equivalent, for example, an Attestation of Equivalence of Secondary V studies, or a postsecondary diploma such as the Diploma of College Studies or a Bachelor’s degree.
Persons who are at least 16 years of age on September 30 of the school year in which their training is to begin and have earned the Secondary IV credits in language of instruction, second language and mathematics in the programs of study established by the Minister, or have been granted recognition of equivalent learning.
Persons who are at least 18 years of age upon entry into the program and have the following functional prerequisites: the successful completion of the General Development Test, or recognition of equivalent learning.
Persons who have obtained Secondary III credits in language of instruction, second language and mathematics in programs established by the Minister are required to pursue general education courses, concurrently with their vocational training, in order to obtain the Secondary IV credits they lack in language of instruction, second language and mathematics in programs established by the Minister.
Persons who are 15 years of age or older on June 30 of the school year preceding their admission to a pilot project involving concurrent general education and practical training, who have attained vocational maturity and who have earned their Secondary II credits in language of instruction, second language and mathematics. By means of concurrent admission with an integrated schedule, they will continue their vocational training and their general education in the youth sector to complete the Secondary III prerequisites they need to obtain their vocational training diploma. Authorization by the Minister is required for the concurrent admission of a student in Secondary III to the program of study.
