Training Description
Basic life support skills for hunters, fishers, professional guides or park rangers. You’ll learn to provide care over in remote areas, while awaiting rescue.
The Wilderness Advanced First Aid is designed for:
- those who are looking to become professional guides or park rangers
- those who work in the field of recreation or ecotourism
- for recreational, outdoor enthusiasts and group leaders who venture into remote and challenging environments
Participants learn the skills and strategies necessary to provide extended care over periods ranging from 24 hours to a few days.
Here are the topics covered for this class:
- General concepts of wilderness medicine and the Patient Assessment System
- CPR, AED, and basic life support skills
- Anatomy and major problems of the respiratory, circulatory, and nervous systems
- Musculoskeletal injury assessment and splinting
- Spine injury assessment and management
- Allergies and anaphylaxis
- Medical emergencies such as asthma and diabetes
- Wound and burn management
- Environmental problems such as hypothermia, heat illnesses, lightning, and drowning
- Backcountry medicine and toxins, bites, and stings
- Medical legal issues
Admission requirements
Candidates must meet certain criteria.
Must meet the following conditions:
- Be at least 16 years of age.
- Must live in Nunavik.
