Stories

At the heart of every thriving school community are the dedicated educators who go above and beyond to support student success. At Kativik Ilisarniliriniq, long-time staff members such as Christine Crochet exemplify the transformative power of teaching. This article celebrates Christine’s commitment to inclusive education and highlights the vital role special education plays in empowering students across Nunavik.

A long-term commitment to Nunavik students

Christine has spent over a decade making a meaningful difference in Nunavik, teaching everything from Grade 6 to Secondary 3 English and social studies. She now finds the most fulfillment in her role as a teacher in the Training for a Semiskilled Trade (TST) program.

For the past seven years, Christine has dedicated herself to supporting students with diverse learning needs, particularly those who face challenges with reading. Now serving as a TST (Training for a Semiskilled Trade) teacher, she maintains an individualized and deeply empathetic approach. She works one-on-one or with small groups of Secondary 1 to 5 students, tailoring her schedule to meet each learner where they are.

If I can help a student feel good about themselves, if I can push them forward to persevere, to graduate, then I’ve done my job.

Building confidence, perseverance and hope

For Christine, one-on-one teaching is not just about academics; it’s about restoring confidence and nurturing perseverance. She witnesses firsthand how students transform when they feel seen and supported: “They go from being defeated to feeling like they’ve accomplished something,” she says. That shift—from discouragement to pride—is what drives her.

Her collaboration with classroom teachers ensures that every student’s progress is monitored and celebrated. Whether she is providing resources or adjusting strategies, Christine is an essential part of a larger support system.

Her message to students is both practical and inspiring: “Stay in school. So you can be the teachers, the doctors, the nurses, and the lawyers your communities need. Stay in school—you can do it.”

Christine Crochet’s work reminds us that teaching is not a side role—it’s a cornerstone of inclusive, compassionate learning. Her dedication helps build not just better students, but stronger communities. Thank you for sharing your experience with us, Christine!
