Matching Ambition with Action: The Pre-Vocational Pathway
To offer clear, purpose-driven options,
Kativik Ilisarniliriniq has created the Pre-Vocational Pathway.
A flexible pathway,
carved before you.
Designed for students age 15 or older, this adapted high school route combines targeted general education with personalized learning. The Pre-Vocational Pathway is a personalized schedule crafted around the student’s sense of self, with support from their class teacher and school counselors. This framework rests on two core pillars:
1) Lock in your prerequisites.
We focus on the core subjects—Inuktitut, Second Language, and Math—providing the essential building blocks needed to step straight into a trade program.
2) Build around what you love.
What you learn in school should relate to your daily life. Through personalized projects, you get to explore hands-on skills that matter to you. This will help you maintain strong momentum, while making school feel personal, engaging, and worth showing up for.
This is about meeting students where they are. We tailor courses around personal goals so students can earn the trade prerequisites they need, without getting stuck along the way.
Guided delivery
and the IEP backbone.
Connecting students to meaningful opportunities requires early engagement in the classroom. When students feel disconnected from a standard grade-level workload, school can lose its spark. This pathway reignites that spark through integrated guidance and co-teaching, threading career exploration directly into the rhythm of daily learning.
To ensure transparency and accountability, all supports made available to the student are formally documented in an Individualized Education Plan (IEP). This history of support ensures that every decision made aligns with the student’s best interests and keeps families fully informed along the way.
Asking parents for their trust means showing our work. The IEP is how we do that: it documents the support provided every step of the way, proving that this pathway is a deliberate, evidence-based choice designed for their child’s success.
Ready for what’s next?
A common misconception is that additional pathways carry no official weight. In reality, all credits earned in Pre-Vocational courses are recorded directly on the student’s official MEQ Achievement Record, providing clear, documented proof of their educational progress.
While students do not graduate with a Secondary School Diploma (SSD) from this specific pathway, these earned credits open direct access to:
> Vocational Training ➔
Programs offered through Adult Education, where students go on to earn a Diploma of Vocational Studies (DVS), a Skills Training Certificate (STC), or an Attestation of Vocational Specialization (AVS).
> General Education ➔
Within the adult sector to complete prerequisites toward a Secondary School Diploma.
By offering adapted programming that honours each student’s unique journey, Kativik Ilisarniliriniq reinforces a fundamental truth: education is a lifelong path of self-discovery, where every step forward counts.
