Stories

In Nunavik, the dedication and resilience of educators play a crucial role in student success. Against this backdrop, stories like Alexandrine Hugonnier’s stand out. Her decision to pursue professional certification while teaching reflects a deep commitment to quality education and to the communities she serves.

From creative workshops to full-time teaching

Recent media coverage has highlighted Quebec’s growing reliance on uncertified teachers—educators who often enter classrooms with limited formal training and learn on the job. In response to this challenge, one Kativik Ilisarniliriniq (KI) teacher in Ivujivik decided to pursue professional certification, demonstrating resilience and a strong commitment to delivering quality education in Nunavik.

Alexandrine Hugonnier’s journey to becoming a teacher began organically. In 2022, as part of her master’s degree in literature at Université du Québec à Montréal (UQAM), she was invited to Nuvviti School to lead a series of creative writing and illustration workshops. The project culminated in a children’s book and left a lasting impression on Alexandrine, thanks to the deep connection she formed with the students and the community.

When I realized that I liked teaching primary school, I didn’t want to close that door on myself, so I looked into getting my formal qualifications. It really wasn’t easy because short programs are still very new on the market; even admission requirements aren’t clear, nor are the eligibility conditions.

By the time she completed her master’s degree, Alexandrine had decided to focus on elementary education full-time. In the fall of 2023, that decision led her back to Nuvviti School, where she now teaches and continues to build strong ties with the community.

Pursuing certification with strong support

Determined to formalize her qualifications, Alexandrine pursued a graduate diploma in teaching at TÉLUQ University. Navigating the complexities of remote learning from Nunavik, she faced challenges with program eligibility and institutional connections. Thanks to her persistence and the support of KI’s Human Resources department, she found a path forward.

After initially enrolling in a master’s program to earn transferable credits, she successfully applied for a program transfer when TÉLUQ updated its eligibility requirements. In January 2025, she officially began her graduate diploma in teaching. Thus, she continues her journey as both a teacher and a student, committed to making a lasting impact in Nunavik.

This graduate diploma is designed for educators who hold a bachelor’s degree but are not yet legally qualified to teach. Offered entirely online, the program allows teachers to study remotely, apply practical coursework directly in the classroom, and manage their own schedule.

It’s definitely worth it because the classes hold value. We learn things that are immediately useful to us. It’s an extra effort, but if we take it slow, making sure to maintain a certain balance between work, studies and social life, it’s just riding this wave until we get our qualifications.
