Today we celebrate Alasie Sakiagak from Kangiqsujuaq, a certified sign language teacher whose unique skills help create inclusive learning environments and ensure that every student has the opportunity to succeed.
A lifetime of teaching in Kangiqsujuaq
A member of Kativik Ilisarniliriniq’s team since 1989, teacher Alasie has spent decades guiding students at Arsaniq School in Kangiqsujuaq. She is known for her unwavering dedication and her unique ability to teach through both spoken and signed language. Alasie’s journey as an educator reflects a lifelong commitment to inclusion, kindness and the power of communication.
In the early years of her teaching career, Alasie taught kindergarten before pursuing her dream of working with Deaf students. Her passion led her to complete a training program in sign language; in 2004, she graduated as a certified sign language teacher and interpreter. Even after returning to teach hearing students, she continued to integrate sign language into her classroom—a method she finds especially effective for slow learners and students navigating multiple languages, such as English and Inuktitut.
I love my school. I love my students. Even when I was away for one week, the students said, ‘You’ve been gone too long!’ One of the students told me, ‘You’re like the mother of the school.’
Lasting impact and future goals
Alasie’s commitment to education is deeply personal. She is now teaching the children of her first students from the 1990s, creating a full circle that reflects her lasting impact. She regularly asks her students what they have learned each day, encouraging a culture of reflection and growth. Her teaching philosophy centres on kindness, teamwork and self-reliance.
So what’s next for Alasie? With just two courses left to complete her bachelor’s degree, she is already thinking about her next steps: more training, more teaching. “I’m not waiting until I’m 65 to retire,” she laughs. “If my body lets me, I’ll work until I’m 90!” Fuelled by energy, curiosity and a deep love for her students, Alasie’s journey is far from over—and the classroom remains her favourite place to be.
